The worst thing about thinking to much is, it will give you a headache. I personally tend to do that to myself quite often. But at times it is neccessary. In the case of Radon, because it is my business and passion, I think about it quite often and so from time to time…I ask myself questions that maybe the general public might ask me. You know…kind of ….practice what you speak. One of the most often asked questions I get is …what is Radon ? …and like normal I go into my verbal spill of what it is and where it comes from and how to get rid of it. Then I started getting one of those thinking headaches and it came to me…a thought….a question ?…and a statement. All rolled up in one !
What is Radon ? To me its just not that hard to say …well it is this….or that….But I have to look at it from the general publics view and well….what is radon….yes I am beating around the bush …But I am also trying to make a statement.
Think about it this way. Most everyone knows about carbon monoxide….CO for short….Almost everyone has or knows someone who has a detector in there home. You can find them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Ace hardware and the list goes on and on as to the number of places you can buy them.
There are some city’s and county’s fire department’s that even give them out when they give out smoke detectors. You will also see commerical’s about ones you can buy at the above mentioned places. Everybody knows what they are and where to buy them. No idenity crisis’s here. So ….as the more I thought about it….I thought ….well…what about Radon ? Like I mentioned in a earlier blog ( see Radon by the numbers ) Carbon Monoxide…CO …kills approximately 300 people a year in the United States. Now I would never ever look down on the companies that sale them or GOD forbid someone who has lost a loved one from this poison.
But at the same time when you look at Radon and the numbers associated with it ( 300 a year for CO deaths and 21,000 per year from lung cancer caused by the exposure to Radon – note: numbers are from the EPA ) then….well here comes that headache again….what is the difference ? Why is one so widely know about and then the other is …well…back again….Radon….what is Radon ? Then it hit me like a bolt of lightning.
The clue was right before me all along….Marketing….it all has to do with marketing ! PERIOD. CO is big business and because of that The CO detectors are at Lowe’s and every other place between here and your grandmothers house. So I decided I needed to test my theory the next time I went to Lowe’s. Now I did not go to Lowe’s just to prove my theory but while I was there…. the hunt was on.
Where are the CO detectors ? It did not take me long to find them…Isle 15 right there on the end. Right next to the smoke detectors…hmmm…. But where are the radon detectors ? As I pondered the thought and looked aimlessly about ( sugar plums danced in my head…no that is another story….) back to what we were talking about…Radon….. As I thought about the numbers and remember the numbers do not lie ! They are just numbers nothing more nothing less but still the truth. OK…smoke detectors and house fires…2,800 deaths per year in the United States ( almost every city, county and State has codes about smoke detectors in the home ). So I can justify why they are there at the end of Isle 15.
And CO detectors…just about as many of them. Quite a few of them….boxes and boxes of them as a matter of fact…. So where are the Radon test kits ?….Ahhhh. yes there they are…on the end….one box….with three kits in the one box….next to the (LOTS OF BOXES OF CO DETECTORS ! ). But we are in luck ! They are on sale ! $5.00 dollars off…..clearance sale !!! Are they getting ready to discontinue carrying them ?….looks like it to me….but why …remember the numbers do not lie….
Now we all do know why…lets be honest with ourselfs. Even if the numbers do not lie there is one thing in the universe more powerful then even the numbers. Yes that’s right….Marketing and big business ! They go ….and should….hand in hand. There is no getting around it. It is ….AS THE WORLD TURNS…..
So what is a guy to do ? I do not have millions to throw into advertising ( does anyone have a few million dollars I can borrow …have ? ). It all boils down to the foundational truths about radon….I myself can do only so much…..But you…. yes you….. can spread the word. Make it your good deed for the day. Tell someone ….anyone …about radon…yes anyone. Your doctor, dentist the grocery store clerk…tell your childs teacher…tell your pastor …tell someone !!! and at the same time maybe even save a life. It will give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside….I promise !
Just for info…. the above story is true ….but as they say ….the names of been changed to protect the innocent ….just kidding…it is a true story though…until next time….Thanks for listening !!!
